What is Spiruline 500 BIO by Be-Life?

Spiruline 500 BIO is a single-ingredient organic spirulina supplement by Be-Life — one of Belgium's most respected nutritional supplement laboratories, B Corp certified since 2023. Each tablet delivers 500mg of fresh, pure spirulina (Arthrospira platensis) in a pressed tablet format, without binders, colourants or preservatives. The formula contains one ingredient and one ingredient only: organic spirulina.

Spirulina is a cyanobacterium — a photosynthetic microorganism often described as an algae — that has existed on Earth for over three billion years. It is widely recognised as one of the most nutrient-dense natural foods available, providing an extraordinary concentration of protein (more than 60% of its dry weight), essential fatty acids, carbohydrates, vitamins (A, B group, D, E and K), minerals (iron, calcium, magnesium, zinc, potassium, manganese, selenium) and unique bioactive pigments including phycocyanin, chlorophyll a and carotenoids.

Spirulina's protein content is particularly notable: at over 60% of dry weight, it exceeds the protein density of meat, fish, legumes or dairy — and the protein is a complete profile, containing all essential amino acids including leucine, isoleucine, valine, lysine, methionine, threonine, phenylalanine and tryptophan. Unlike plant proteins from legumes or grains, spirulina protein has a high digestibility and biological value.

The Be-Life spirulina is grown in open basins in India, irrigated exclusively with spring water, far from industrial zones. Contaminant levels (heavy metals, pesticides, HAPs, algae toxins) are consistently maintained well below the thresholds set by applicable regulations. The product carries full EU organic certification.

Suitable for athletes, active adults, convalescents, seniors and children from 6 years of age (at age-appropriate doses).

One ingredient. Billions of years of nutrition. Zero additives.

How Spiruline 500 BIO by Be-Life supports your objectives

💪 >60% complete plant protein — all essential amino acids Spirulina is the highest-protein natural food known to science, with protein representing more than 60% of its dry weight. Unlike plant proteins from grains or legumes that require complementary combinations to achieve a complete amino acid profile, spirulina contains all essential amino acids in a single source. This makes it an exceptional protein complement for athletes, vegetarians, vegans and anyone seeking to increase daily protein intake without animal products.

🩸 Naturally rich in iron — normal red blood cell formation and oxygen transport Spirulina is one of the richest plant-based sources of iron available. Iron contributes to the formation of normal red blood cells and haemoglobin, and to the normal transport of oxygen throughout the body — the fundamental physiological process that underlies aerobic exercise capacity and recovery. For athletes with high iron demands, women of reproductive age and individuals on plant-based diets where iron bioavailability is often limited, spirulina provides a meaningful natural iron contribution.

🔬 Phycocyanin >360mg per 6 tablets — spirulina's signature bioactive Phycocyanin is the blue pigment unique to spirulina and other cyanobacteria, and the compound most associated with spirulina's distinctive health properties. Each 6-tablet serving of Be-Life Spiruline 500 BIO provides a minimum of 360mg of phycocyanin — a dose consistent with the quantities studied in the scientific literature for antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and immune-modulating effects. Phycocyanin is not found in any other common food source at comparable concentrations.

🌈 Natural carotenoids (>12mg/6 tabs) and chlorophyll a (>33mg/6 tabs) Spirulina contains significant concentrations of beta-carotene (provitamin A) and other carotenoids alongside chlorophyll a. These natural pigments contribute to antioxidant protection, support normal skin and mucous membrane health, and contribute to the formula's naturally complete micronutrient profile. Chlorophyll a, structurally similar to haemoglobin, has been studied for its role in blood health and detoxification support.

⚡ Energy, vitality and immune support for multiple life situations Spirulina supports tonus and vitality and reinforces the body's natural defences — the two EU-authorised health claims most relevant to this product's use in states of physical depletion. Its rich B vitamin content (particularly B1, B2, B3, B6 and B12 in trace amounts) contributes to normal energy metabolism and the reduction of tiredness. Its iron and copper content supports normal immune system function and normal red blood cell formation.

🌿 Certified organic — grown in spring water, far from industrial zones Be-Life's spirulina carries full EU organic certification (DE-ÖKO-001) and is grown in open basins in India using spring water, with full traceability and contaminant testing. Heavy metals, pesticides, HAPs and algal toxins are systematically tested and consistently maintained well below applicable regulatory thresholds. This transparent quality approach is a direct expression of Be-Life's B Corp commitment.

🎯 Goal guide

🏋️ Mass gain: 4 to 6 tabs/day. Contributes additional complete protein and iron to support high training loads.

🔥 Weight loss / cutting: 4 to 6 tabs/day. Dense micronutrient coverage with minimal calories during caloric restriction.

⚖️ Body recomposition: 4 to 6 tabs/day. Daily nutritional support for sustained high-frequency training cycles.

Serving suggestion

Take 2 to 6 tablets per day (up to a maximum of 20 tablets per day under medical supervision). Take in the morning with a meal. For multi-tablet daily protocols, spread the intake across the morning meal. For prolonged use beyond standard supplementation periods, seek medical advice. Swallow with a large glass of water.

Important note on iron absorption: tannins present in tea and coffee inhibit iron absorption in the intestine. Since iron is one of spirulina's key active compounds, avoid consuming Spiruline 500 BIO simultaneously with tea or coffee to preserve its iron contribution.

Best times to enjoy it

🍳 In the morning with breakfast (recommended) The brand-recommended timing. Taking spirulina tablets at breakfast with food optimises absorption of fat-soluble compounds (beta-carotene, vitamins D and E) and avoids the mild digestive discomfort that can occur when spirulina is taken on an empty stomach, particularly at the beginning of a supplementation cycle.

🌅 Before a morning training session (athletes) For athletes who train in the morning, taking spirulina tablets 30 to 60 minutes before the session (with breakfast) provides iron, complete protein and energy-metabolism B vitamins at the start of the day's most demanding period.

☀️ Consistent daily use, including rest days Spirulina's benefits — protein contribution, iron supplementation, energy metabolism support — are cumulative and require consistent daily intake to produce sustained effects. Include on rest days as part of a year-round daily nutritional habit.

📅 Start with a lower dose and increase gradually First-time users should start with 2 tablets per day and increase to their target dose over 1 to 2 weeks. This gradual introduction allows the digestive system to adapt and minimises the mild digestive discomfort occasionally reported by new users at higher doses.

Daily protein target reminder

Spiruline 500 BIO is a nutritional supplement, not a primary protein source. At 6 tablets per day (3g of spirulina), the protein contribution is approximately 1.8g — meaningful as a micronutrient and bioactive supplement, but not a substitute for dietary protein. For training adaptations to fully materialise, adequate daily protein intake from complete food sources remains essential. Current sports nutrition science recommends 1.6 to 2.2g of protein per kg of body weight per day for active individuals.

Body weightMin. target (1.6g/kg)Max. target (2.2g/kg)
55 kg88g/day121g/day
65 kg104g/day143g/day
75 kg120g/day165g/day
85 kg136g/day187g/day

Goal-specific guidance

For athletes under high training load: Use 4 to 6 tablets per day consistently as a daily nutritional foundation supplement. Spirulina's iron content is particularly relevant for endurance athletes and female athletes with elevated iron losses. The phycocyanin content provides antioxidant support during periods of elevated free radical production from high-volume training.

For weight loss and cutting: Spirulina provides an exceptional micronutrient density per calorie — approximately 12 to 15 kcal per 6-tablet serving, delivering complete protein, iron, B vitamins, carotenoids and phycocyanin. This makes it one of the most micronutrient-efficient supplements available for athletes in a caloric deficit who want to maintain comprehensive nutritional coverage without adding significant calories.

🏅 Sport Nutrition "Did you know?"

Spirulina is the most protein-dense natural food on Earth — but it was not always known as a supplement. The Aztecs of Mexico and the Kanem people of Chad independently consumed spirulina as a food staple for centuries, harvesting it from alkaline lakes and drying it into cakes or powder. The Aztecs called it "tecuitlatl" and consumed it regularly as a high-energy food alongside maize. Western science only rediscovered spirulina's nutritional properties in the 20th century, when NASA identified it as a candidate food for long-duration space missions — selecting it specifically for its extraordinary protein density, complete amino acid profile and minimal water and space requirements. It remains one of the most studied foods in the context of sustainable nutrition and the future of food systems.

Q1 — Why is spirulina considered a superfood? Spirulina earns the "superfood" description more genuinely than most compounds given that label. No other natural food concentrates as much complete protein (>60% by dry weight), essential fatty acids, vitamins (A, B group, D, E, K), minerals (iron, calcium, magnesium, zinc, potassium, manganese, selenium) and unique bioactive pigments (phycocyanin, chlorophyll a, carotenoids) in a single gram of matter. Calorie for calorie, spirulina provides a broader and denser micronutrient profile than any common food, making it the most nutritionally efficient supplement available as a daily baseline.

Q2 — Why should I not drink tea or coffee when taking spirulina? Tea — and to a lesser extent coffee — contains tannins, plant polyphenols that form insoluble complexes with iron in the digestive tract. These complexes cannot be absorbed, effectively blocking the intestinal uptake of iron from the meal or supplement consumed simultaneously. Since iron is one of spirulina's most significant mineral contributions, consuming Be-Life Spiruline 500 BIO at the same time as tea or coffee significantly reduces the iron benefit. Allow at least 30 to 60 minutes between spirulina and any tea or coffee consumption.

Q3 — Is Be-Life Spiruline 500 BIO suitable for vegans? Yes, fully. Spirulina is a cyanobacterium (microorganism) — not an animal product. No animal-derived ingredients are present in the formula, and no gelatin is used in the tablet shell (it contains no shell — it is a pressed tablet of pure spirulina). The product is certified vegan and is one of the few high-protein natural supplements that is completely compatible with vegan nutrition.

Q4 — Is this product suitable for children? Yes, from 6 years of age as indicated on the official label. Children from 6 to 12 years may take 1 to 3 tablets per day with a morning meal. Children from 12 years may follow the standard adult protocol of 2 to 6 tablets per day. As with all supplements for children, consult a physician before beginning a supplementation protocol.

Q5 — What does "no binder, no colourant, no preservative" mean in practice? Most commercial spirulina tablets contain binders (such as microcrystalline cellulose or magnesium stearate) to hold the powder together during pressing. Be-Life Spiruline 500 BIO uses only pure dried spirulina powder — the tablet holds its shape through the natural cohesion of the spirulina particles under high pressure, without any additive. This means every milligram of the tablet is active spirulina, with no dilution from carriers or excipients.
